Originally found in an area from Iran to the Himalayas, the pomegranate is now cultivated throughout the Mediterranean region. The pomegranate's botanical name, Punica Granatum, translates as "apple with many seeds" and is sometimes referred to as Chinese apple.

Pomegranates are a good source of Vitamin C. They also contain modest amounts of Vitamins A and E and folic acid. The antioxidant content of pomegranates is greater than blueberries, cranberries and red wine.
